5 Day Module Overview
Hazardous Awareness - Attendance of this course will allow drivers to legally carry goods in both excepted and limited quantities as defined by the Dangerous Goods regulations. It covers gas, flammable liquids, flammable solids, oxidizing agents, toxic, infectious, corrosive and miscellaneous categories.
Driver Hours - This subject covers the laws and regulation surrounding driver's hours for both LGV and PCV drivers, including an explanation of both analogue and digital tachographs and information on the most recent changes to drivers' hours in 2020 and tachograph equipment in 2021. Use of an on-screen simulator to demonstrate manual entries and time adjustments for UTC / BST, Ferry mode and 'out of scope'. Additionally, it covers domestic hours regulations.
Fire Safety - In the year 2019/20 there were over 20,000 vehicle fires recorded including 248 on PCVs and 991 on LGVs and trailers. This course looks at the common causes of fire, precautions that can be taken to minimise risk and the type of firefighting equipment available to drivers and how to use it,
Drugs, Alcohol and Fatigue - This session explores three of the most common contributors to serious and fatal road traffic collisions. It covers fatigue and its causes, alcohol – it’s effects and how long it remains in the system and drugs – legal, illegal and the ever changing ‘Novel Psychoactive Substances’ often referred to as ‘legal highs’. An increase in digital data from dashcams and on board CCTV along with police ability to roadside test for both alcohol and common drugs means more and more offences are now being both detected and prosecuted.
Load Security and Distribution/Pre-use Checks -Insecure loads do not have to fall off a vehicle before attracting fines for the driver and issues for the operator’s licence. A poorly placed load may not be overweight but could lead to axle overloads and associated problems. When coupled with an explanation of daily checks and the consequences of ‘tick boxing’ these from the cab the day’s modules aim to ensure both safety and compliance within the transport sector.
First Aid - Covering Emergency First Aid skills designed to give course participants the information and skills that can literally save lives. The course includes scene assessment, personal protection, casualty assessment and first on scene actions. We cover causes of unconsciousness, burns (chemical and heat), sprains, strains, broken bones, diabetes and stroke awareness and treatment as well as CPR, recovery position and defibrillators. Where possible, and in line with guidance practical demonstrations and practice will be included.
